FOUNTAIN, Colo. (August 2, 2011) €“ The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour gathered at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo., last weekend for the Mountain States Championship, the final stop on the circuit before the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships at the end of August. The event, hosted by the Rocky Mountain Solo Series put on in a joint effort by the Colorado Region SCCA and the Continental Divide Region SCCA, welcomed 178 competitors to a racing facility that has previously hosted IndyCar and NASCAR events on the permanent oval. On the course, the action was spread out across a number of classes. The largest class of the weekend, Street Touring Ultra, was won by Christopher Mayfield, of Fort Collins, Colo., by 0.706-seconds in a 2006 SCR Performance/Thanks Ryan! Mitsubishi Evolution. Sean Grubb finished second in a 2006 iZoom Graphics Mitsubishi Evolution. Tighter competition came in the A Stock class, where Paul Brown and teammate Wiggy Greacen battled in a 2000 Plastic PP Racing Chevrolet Corvette. Brown, from Los Alamos, N.M., topped Greacen by just 0.186-second to become the Mountain States Champion in class. Bill Schenker, from Corona del Mar, Calif., drove his 1999 MiataRoadster/ChaseCam/OSGiken Mazda Miata through his six runs to top Tim Aro by 0.129-second in C Street Prepared. Aro made all six of his runs in his 1995 SoloPro Driving School Mazda Miata without hitting a cone, but fell just short of Schenker. Even the karters were in on the action at Pikes Peak, with Tom Reynolds, from Albuquerque, N.M., topping the Formula 125 field in a 2008 Sorenomoreusa.com/Fastech Racing GP 8. Both Reynolds and Jared Langenfeld, driving a 2008 Mike Wilson Kart, got faster throughout the weekend. At the finish, however, it was Reynolds with a 0.084-second advantage over Langenfeld.
